I'm Back

Yep, I'm back in Korea. You may be wondering why I'm just now writing this and I'll tell you - I've only been back for 11 days. Cut me some slack. I've been getting caught up on important things like FIFA '09 on the XBox and getting the oil changed on my bike.

Anyway, on a more serious note, it's good to be back here with my wife and dog. I had a great time in the States with my family. I'm glad my brother and sister-in-law were able to adjust their trips to match mine. It was good to see them and hang out with there boy a little bit. It was also nice to spend time with my sister and her kids. My oldest niece is growing up really fast, but she's not too cool for her family yet. My oldest nephew took 2nd in a wrestling tournament I got to watch. I was proud of him. He wrestled again the day I flew out and he was expected to take first in that, but I haven't heard any news about it. It was great to visit with Aunts and Uncles and cousins while I was there. I miss them all quite a bit.

Daniel is doing remarkably better than when I first saw him. He is able to make phone calls and feed himself. Jen and I called him this past Saturday night (Sunday morning) and he chatted for a while with us and then told us that it was time for him to go to bed lol, so we let him go.

I want to say thank you to all of you who have been praying for him. It looks like he's still got some life in him. It's very unclear exactly how much. He will have an MRI done in April (I think) to look for any signs of the tumor or cancer returning/spreading. I'll let you know what they find (or don't find). Thanks again for praying. I believe that you and he will have the opportunity to meet sometime in the very distant future, and I'm very thankful for that.

This is Daniel. I was gonna put these pics up on yesterday's post, but my fingertips were bleeding at the end of it. So, now that they've healed, I'll update you.



He had a great day today. My mom spent time with him in the morning and I caught up with him in the afternoon. He wanted to play cards and talk like usual. He was pretty easy to understand today, quite different from the day before yesterday.



He boxed with his little Pooh Bear briefly today. He started laughing so hard he almost choked, so we stopped doing that. He was still awake when I left him at 8:30 tonight. Hopefully tomorrow will be a good day like today. Thanks everybody for your prayers.



By the way, Pooh Bear is a little stuffed bear, not our dad. He doesn't get cool nicknames like that.

Konglish - Band

In Korea, a "band" is not something that wraps around packages. It's not a group of musicians. It's not even a rubber band. It's a BAND-AID (insert copyright symbol here)!

It seems that Koreans tend to shorten a lot of words or phrases to be just the beginning of the actual word. Examples would be "otobai" (short for autobiKe), or "one piece" (short for one piece DRESS), or "combi" (short for combiNATION -- that's right, not combo - combi). The thing is, it's not a lazy thing so much. Ok, it's a lazy thing. But American's do it too. Perhaps I'll make "combi" the next Konglish quiz. Because it's not what you think it is.

Congratulations to half of you!! To the other half, better luck next time. Toast does, in fact, mean "a breakfast sandwich." Take heart if you got it wrong, some people in Korea don't know what it is either.

Here is a toast stand where you can probably order anything from "Egg Toast" to "Combi Toast" which might include pickles, corn, egg, cheese, ham, onion, and perhaps some seafood. Delicious eh? Be sure to check in tomorrow for the next Konglish Quiz!
